Improve Quality, Affordability, and Management of Aboriginal Housing in Eurobodalla

The issue

Since 1988, when Aboriginal housing was established to provide Indigenous people with quality homes and affordable rents, we, the Aboriginal people of Eurobodalla,  New South Wales, have experienced substantial neglect. The government, Aboriginal housing, and CHPs Searms Aboriginal Housing Corporation who tendered to manage these homes have disappointingly failed to advance our living conditions. We, the Indigenous people of the Eurobodalla Shire/South Coast, are yet to experience the promise of new, quality homes or reasonably affordable rents.

Data and comparisons between mainstream tenants and Aboriginal housing tenants managed by CHPs strikingly display a concerning disparity. Indigenous people, contrary to the initial purpose of Aboriginal housing, are charged higher rents. This inequity in housing and wrongful financial strain put our tenancy at risk and cause undue distress, perpetuating inequality and injustice.

We call upon the authorities to ensure all Aboriginal housing properties in Eurobodalla include affordable rent, quality homes, and professional tenancy management. They must protect Indigenous community members so our tenancy agreements are not risked or causing distress. It's high time to honor the original mandate of Aboriginal Housing, to deliver quality and affordable homes to our people in Eurobodalla, NSW, Australia.

Please sign this petition to urge the responsible bodies to act now for social justice and to guarantee the dignity and security of our Indigenous community members.
