The Issue

When I first joined a Facebook support group for women undergoing a hysterectomy, I never imagined it would become such a critical source of advice and support. Within this group, I discovered just how common it is for women to feel a significant gap in care and guidance following discharge from NHS hospitals after gynaecological operations. This gap is not only poignant but entirely unnecessary, and it signaled to me that our current system urgently needs improvement.

Women who undergo gynaecological procedures deserve comprehensive post-operative care and follow-up that ensures both their physical recovery and emotional well-being. Too often, patients are discharged with minimal follow-up, left to navigate their recovery without adequate resources or professional guidance. An essential part of the healing process is understanding the results of histology reports, addressing any post-operative concerns, and ensuring that recovery milestones are being met.

Evidence suggests that follow-up care significantly impacts recovery outcomes. According to the NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement, structured follow-up appointments decrease readmission rates and enhance patient satisfaction. Yet, the reality is that many women find themselves struggling with unanswered questions and unmet needs weeks after their surgery.

To address these challenges, I propose the implementation of a thorough post-operative care plan for every woman undergoing gynaecological procedures. Within 14 days of hospital discharge, each patient should be offered a follow-up appointment to discuss histology results and voice any concerns. This initial check-up is crucial for early detection of complications or misunderstandings about the recovery process. Additionally, a face-to-face appointment with their GP at the 6-week mark should be mandatory to ensure the patient is progressing well in their recovery journey.

These steps are both realistic and actionable within the current NHS framework. By prioritizing women's health and post-surgical care, we can enhance recovery experiences, reduce unnecessary suffering, and affirm the commitment to high-quality healthcare for all women in the UK.

Join me in petitioning the NHS and relevant health authorities to improve the current discharge and follow-up protocols for gynaecology patients. Sign this petition to demand comprehensive and compassionate care for every woman undergoing gynaecological surgery. Your support is vital in driving this change. Let's ensure no woman ever feels isolated and underserved in her journey to recovery.
