Improve Pedestrian Safety on Miller Avenue

The Issue

Every time you cross Miller Avenue in Mill Valley do you have to dodge cars, wave to get driver’s attention or fear for your safety, especially while with children and dogs? Our roadways have become major dangers and hazards for residents & visitors attempting to walk and cross extremely congested streets. Read on to see why this is constantly happening, and needs immediate solutions!

However, the city of Mill Valley has yet to improve upon these problems that threaten the safety of pedestrians along the entirety of Miller Avenue, which is one of two major corridors of town. The dangers faced every day from a pedestrian’s point of view, especially while walking with school age children, include incidences of the following: nearly being hit by speeding vehicles and e-bikes, not being properly seen because of lack of blinking crossing signals and/or signage or blockages due to trees and parked cars, as well as drivers seeing pedestrians yet failing to comply with laws regarding proper speeds, yielding for crosswalks or stopping properly at stop signs.

The solutions from the City of Mill Valley to address these issues is simple and are not high cost. The lives and safety of our citizens and community should be of the utmost priority, and no one should have to get seriously injured or killed for any changes to occur.

Improvements to the street of Miller Avenue for pedestrian safety should be:
1. Have blinking light signals visible at every single crosswalk (no exceptions).
2. Properly placed, visible signage at every crosswalk stating the law regarding stopping for pedestrians.
3. Speed reduction to 25 along the entire Avenue from the Depot square to Tam High, more frequent MPH signage, including implementing solar paneled digital MPH alerts like the one nearest Tam High.
4. Use of additional stop signs at potential intersections such as Millwood, Park, and Reed Streets in order to reduce speeds and improve cross flow.
5. Hiring a Crossing Guard for Park Ave and other intersections during school drop off times.
6. Remove all blockages and branches (including many from small tress planted along the Miller Ave redesign along Evergreen to Reed) that obstruct the visibility of pedestrians in crosswalks. Reduce parking that may block signs (ie: Southbound on the backside of Watershed).

Without these necessary changes to the safety of our town, more dangerous daily incidences will continue to occur. The amount of road rage and conflict between drivers, cyclists and pedestrians will be widespread and the idyllic setting degraded. Please support this cause and demand the City of Mill Valley to make immediate changes and improvements. There are no reasons to delay and we can make our town a safer and enjoyable place to be!
