Improve Pedestrian Safety at Shaler Blvd. and Edgewater Ave Intersection, Ridgefield NJ
The Issue
My daughter, Serenity Law, was the third person to tragically lose her life at the intersection of Shaler Blvd. and Edgewater Ave in Ridgefield, NJ. Despite the presence of cameras, drivers continue to speed and fail to proceed with caution when the traffic light turns yellow. Serenity was waiting patiently to cross this intersection when she was struck by a vehicle whose driver did not even stop. Ever since this tragic day neither myself, her dad, step parents, or family and friends have been able to come to grips with this horrible situation that is now permanent.
This is not just about my daughter's life that was cut short; it's about all those who risk their lives every day crossing this dangerous intersection. According to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data, pedestrian fatalities remain high in the US with an estimated 6,205 deaths in 2019 alone (source: NHTSA). This is a clear indication that more needs to be done to ensure pedestrian safety.
We are calling on local authorities in Ridgefield NJ - Mayor, Hugo Jimenez and City Council members - to take immediate action towards improving safety measures at this particular intersection. Possible solutions could include installing speed bumps or humps near the intersection or enhancing visibility for drivers through better lighting or clearer signage.
Every life matters; let us prevent any more families from experiencing such devastating loss due our failure as a community to act promptly on this issue. Please sign this petition today so we can make our streets safer for everyone.
