Improve Paternity Leave in the UK

The Issue

My journey into fatherhood has been monumentally fulfilling but undeniably challenging. The current paternity leave policy in the UK has largely contributed to these difficulties, denying me the chance to spend those precious first weeks with my newborn. It is not only my story, but a narrative echoed by millions of fathers across the country who feel sidelined by an outdated and inadequte system.

The UK's paternity leave policy is one of the least accommodating in Europe. As of 2024, the UK policy offers 2 weeks at a meager £184.03 or 90% of the father's average weekly earnings, whichever is lower. This is barely sustainable and permits many fathers only two weeks away from work, drastically limiting their involvement during their child's crucial early development stage. According to a report by UNICEF, parental involvement is imperative to the child's cognitive development and school readiness.

For context, here are some policies from across Europe and the Globe:

  • France: 28 days (partial or full pay with government income protection)
  • Spain: 16 weeks at full pay.
  • Netherlands: 6 weeks (1 week full pay plus an additional 5 weeks at a reduced pay)
  • Norway: 15 weeks at 100% pay OR 19 weeks at 80% pay.
  • Portugal: 28 days.
  • Japan: 1 year (67% of salary for the first 180 days, reduced to 50% for the remainder of the leave).
  • Australia: 100 days paid leave to be shared between both parents.

It is high time that our voices are heard and our experiences acknowledged. The government needs to reassess and reformulate the paternity leave policy, aligning it more favourably with that of neighbouring countries and indeed countries across the globe, where individuals are entitled to longer periods of higher-paid parental leave. This change is not merely about granting fathers their rightful place in their children's lives but also about promoting family cohesion and providing a much needed update to how we as a society view the role of the father in the modern day.

This is a plea that resonates with many. We call upon sympathetic parties, stakeholders, and the government to revise the UK's paternity leave policy. Stand up for change. Stand up for fathers. Please, sign this petition.
