The Issue

Every day is a battle, and sometimes it feels like I'm walking side by side with the devil. This feeling isn't just an abstract thought—it's my reality as a veteran dealing with PTSD. I often feel ignored by those who are supposed to advocate for my health and well-being. It's emotionally exhausting, and some days it seems like all my spirit has been drained. Yet, every sunrise is a small victory, a reminder to keep going.

Many of our veterans face significant challenges when they return home. So many veterans also face these same challenges from a situation they had no control in; such as MST (Military Sexual Trauma). The mental scars from their service can be as debilitating as physical wounds. Sadly, the support systems in place, such as veterans affairs, doctors and nurses, law enforcement, and patient advocates, often fall short. This leaves many feeling abandoned and misunderstood. It's not just about me; many of my fellow veterans share this struggle. We need better mental health support to address the unique needs of veterans with PTSD.

I envision a future where veterans receive the care and attention they deserve. This means adequately trained mental healthcare providers, who understand and prioritize mental health issues. Who value our lives and offer every option available to us outside of medication. More referral opportunities for veterans to be seen by civilian providers. Sexual Assault Reporting should not be used as a bargaining chip in our care. I strongly and firmly believe that just because someone “did not report” does not mean it did not happen, nor that they did not beg for help. We know that far too many of our military members are assaulted and failed while serving. Many times, the true impact of that PTSD does not fully set in until you are out of uniform, and surrounded by nothing but your own thoughts. The Department of Veteran Affairs should not require a report to prove someone’s military sexual trauma. We need accessible mental health services tailored specifically for veterans to avoid the feeling of being dodged around with no clear path to healing. It's crucial that these services provide comprehensive support and urgent care that truly meets our needs.

The current system needs reform, and that starts by listening to veterans, and understanding the depth of our struggles. We proudly served and fought for our country; it’s time for our country to fight for us. Better mental health support isn't just a “nice-to-have”—it’s a necessity for the well-being of those who served.

Join me in urging our leaders to improve mental health support for veterans with PTSD. We owe it to those who have sacrificed so much. Please, sign the petition to demand real change and support for our veterans.
