As a longtime resident of Southern Street in Chickasaw, Alabama, I've seen many once vibrant community members leave our neighborhood, largely due to continued neglect and a lack of maintenance. Homes are deteriorating, both from personal neglect and from property owners ignoring the pleas for upkeep from their renters.

Common sights of overgrown trees and limbs, poor lawn care, and improper trash disposal have become increasingly problematic. For example, it was recently brought to light that the power company isn't even cutting limbs back off power-lines, an essential aspect of property maintenance and safety that is not on any list for maintenance. This overlook is not just a danger to the personal safety of residents, but it also detrimentally affects the value of our properties.

Improve the system for advancing complaints or concerns would also greatly improve our community. Clear protocols, functional phone numbers connected to the city, and enforcement of city codes and ordinances are needed for residents to feel heard and protected. 

Furthermore, effective policing and execution of animal control following city codes and regional laws are a necessity in maintaining a safe community.

Once a beloved street in Chickasaw, Southern Street now represents an escalating safety hazard and a health issue in our community. It's urgent that we rectify this situation and restore dignity and quality of life to the residents of Southern Street.
