Improve Macy’s employee conditions!

The Issue

As a former Macy’s Employee I’ve found that there are a number of conditions that should be improved to make it a better working environment. I hope to make a change to better all employees of Macy’s.

1. All sales associates currently work for a mere 3% commission in addition to an hourly minimum wage. The industry standard rages at least 5% to 50% commission. Macy’s needs to step up and provide at least the bare minimum of 5%. Providing this will increase the overall happiness and motivation to sell more product. With more incentive to bring out the best talent in their sales associates, the more revenue Macy’s will make. This will also help retain sales talent.

2. Anyone who does the job of selling to a customer a product should be owed commission. Currently Macy’s is hiring “ringers” to work the register and ring up customers purchases made by sales associates. These ringers have to ring up the customers under the sales associates employee number to give the sales associate credit and commission. This is fine, however sometimes a “ringer” will be the only one who interacts and actually sells to the customer, and they still are not allowed any commission and have to give another associate the credit and commission- Even if the sales associate is stationed in another section of the store and played no part in the sale. The Rigers are being used to perform outside the scope of their duties outlined in their job description upon being hired. They are performing as sales associates, being stationed alone to sell as well as ring up the customer, as opposed to ringing up a customer that a sales associate helped. They are also giving commission to an associate who was not even present at the time of the sale.  The legality of this is gray, as it can be considered fraud, and it is simply not fair. Anyone who does the job of selling the customer, regardless of being a “ringer” status should be entitled to the commission. No one wants to feel like they are being taken advantage of and give their rightfully owed commission to another associate who didn’t do the work. Upon being hired, they are mislead in the job description and used instead to boost the paychecks of associates who are not even there to witness the sale. This is fraud, misrepresentation and breach of contract on Macy’s part.

3. Free parking for the employees. Macy’s currently offers to validate parking for $5 cash or check payment directly to Macy’s. The parking structure at Macy’s is $45 for the whole day without validation. If they can cover $40 of that with validation, they can cover the extra $5 for the fraction of employees that have to drive to work. They are coming to work to get paid by Macy’s, not for them to pay Macy’s. This should be considered a business expense on Macy’s, not the employees.

Even though I’m no longer with Macy’s, I still care about these issues and the people who still work there! These are some of the issues that many have talked about while working there, and feel that there is a need for change! I am still in contact with the employees, and will be updated on any change brought about.
