Improve Lunchtime Conditions at Hurricane High School

Improve Lunchtime Conditions at Hurricane High School
The Issue
As a student and senior at Hurricane High school in Hurricane, WV, I have experienced first-hand the challenges we face during our lunch period. Over the past years, and especially this year, students find themselves in a position where there simply isn't enough space to eat lunch. It's disheartening to see fellow students resort to eating on floors or in hallways due to lack of space.
Aside from the space issues, there is the troubling matter of long lines to get lunch. While seniors have the privilege to leave for lunch slightly early, the lines for the majority of students become outrageously long when everyone is dismissed. This is not only inconvenient for students, but also overwhelming for our kitchen staff and administrators who manage meal-time numbers.
The need for more places to eat lunch and a more efficient system to collect lunch is an urgent issue that needs addressing. Statistics have shown that crowded and stressful environments negatively impact student’s wellbeing and academic performance (source: American Psychological Association). Besides, the National Research Council (NRC) stipulates that schools should have enough seating places for all their students.
By improving lunchtime conditions, we not only stand to benefit in terms of space and convenience, but it also upholds the psychological well-being of students as well as supporting kitchen staff and administrators. If adequate lunchtime provisions and systems are in place, we can create a more efficient, enjoyable and stress-free lunch atmosphere for all involved.
An idea to help with these issues is to allow more seating outside, and to possibly dismiss upperclassmen a few minutes before underclassmen. These small adjustments could positively impact our school and help us be more productive during the day!
Please join me in urging the administrative authorities of Hurricane High School to revise the current lunchtime system and provide more lunch space options for students. Let our voices be heard, allowing a much-needed change to our lunch. Sign this petition now.
