Improve Lighting and Trim Trees at Horner Park Tennis Courts
Improve Lighting and Trim Trees at Horner Park Tennis Courts
The Issue
I am a regular player at the Horner Park tennis/pickleball courts, off Montrose Ave in Chicago. Over time, I've noticed that playing tennis or pickleball at night has become increasingly difficult due to the poor lighting. The lights are dim and the trees surrounding the courts have grown so much that they block even this minimal light. Of the 4 tennis courts, only 1 of them has been deemed to have adequate lighting. The other 3 courts are very dim and the two end courts are essentially unplayable due to extreme darkness.
Horner Park is a beloved community space, used by many for recreation and sports. However, its tennis/pickleball courts are now underutilized after dusk because of inadequate lighting. This not only affects regular players like me but also discourages new players from using these facilities.
Moreover, poorly lit public spaces can potentially increase risks related to safety and security (National Institute of Justice). By improving lighting conditions on these tennis/pickleball courts we can ensure that they remain safe for everyone to use even after sunset.
Additionally, trimming overgrown trees around the area will not only enhance visibility but also reduce potential hazards caused by falling branches or debris (U.S Department of Agriculture).
We propose two key changes: firstly, trim the trees surrounding Horner Park's tennis/pickleball courts; secondly install new lights or replace existing bulbs with LEDs which are brighter and more energy-efficient (U.S Department of Energy).
By making these improvements we can ensure that our local park continues to be a safe place for everyone in our community to enjoy sports activities at any time of day.
Please sign this petition if you believe in enhancing our community's recreational spaces. Let's make playing tennis and pickleball at Horner Park an enjoyable experience for all!
