Improve Insurance Coverage for Rabbit Pet Owners

Improve Insurance Coverage for Rabbit Pet Owners
The Issue
As a responsible pet owner, I have always done the right thing by insuring my pets. However, I have found that insurance coverage for rabbits is significantly less than that for cats and dogs. Despite rabbits there being approximately 1.5 million rabbits as household pets in the UK, with 2.8% of households having at least one.
Making them the 3rd most common domestic pet in the UK, their insurance only covers up to a few thousand pounds for vet bills, while cat and dog plans can cover over £15,000. This disparity is unjust and suggests that rabbits are deemed second-class pets.
Only 20% of rabbits are insured, a much lower proportion than either cats (39%) or dogs (61%). 30% of owners who do not have their rabbits insured said it was because they didn’t think they would get their money’s worth, which was a higher proportion than either dog (22%) or cat (23%) owners. 22% said it was too expensive (a lower proportion than either dog –38%, or cat owners – 41%). (Ref. PDSA.org.uk).
My personal experience has shown me how quickly vet bills can add up and how soon the insurance amount is depleted, limiting treatment options. My beloved bunny has cancer and requires radiotherapy - a cost which isn't fully covered by our current insurance plan but would be if she were a cat or dog.
This situation must change. We call on pet insurers to review their policies regarding coverage amounts for different types of pets. Rabbits deserve equal consideration as other common household pets when it comes to healthcare coverage, so they can get proper veterinary care and treatment. How many bunnies have died because insurance wasn't enough? And owners didn't have thousands saved up so they could get treatments, especially in todays financial times.
Rabbits are smart, loving and intelligent pets, with the correct husbandry they can live between 10 to 12 years plus, just like dogs.
Please sign this petition to demand fairer pet insurance policies for rabbit owners across the UK!
