Improve hygiene in school bathrooms

Improve hygiene in school bathrooms
The Issue
Our school, Delhi Public School Bangalore East, has become a place of serious concern due to the deplorable and unsanitary condition of its washrooms. Day after day, students are forced to use facilities where hygiene is virtually non-existent. Broken doors offer no privacy, while commodes are often unclean, foul-smelling, and poorly maintained. In several instances, the lack of soap, and regular cleaning makes even basic hygiene practices impossible. These conditions are not just unpleasant—they are unsafe and demeaning.
This issue goes far beyond discomfort. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF, inadequate sanitation contributes to nearly 60% of diarrheal diseases globally, with children being the most affected. Studies indicate that poor school sanitation can increase absenteeism by up to 20%, while the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) highlights that unclean restrooms significantly accelerate the spread of bacteria and viruses, including E. coli and norovirus. The current state of our school washrooms creates exactly such a high-risk environment, exposing students to preventable infections and long-term health concerns.
We deserve better. Clean and hygienic sanitation facilities are a basic necessity and a fundamental right, directly impacting student health, dignity, and academic performance. Schools are meant to be safe spaces where parents can trust that their children are cared for in every aspect—not just academically, but physically as well.
Therefore, we urge the administration of Delhi Public School Bangalore East and the relevant authorities to take immediate action. This must include strict daily cleaning schedules, repair of broken fixtures, continuous availability of water and soap, installation of proper flushing systems, and routine hygiene inspections to ensure compliance with established standards.
By signing this petition, you support our demand for a clean and healthy learning environment. Stand with us to ensure that our school upholds the basic standards of hygiene and safety that every student deserves.
