The Issue

It's heartbreaking to witness the countless veterans across the United States who once bravely served and protected our country, now struggling without stable housing or adequate access to mental health care. These individuals made immense sacrifices for our safety, and yet, too many of them are left to battle severe conditions such as PTSD, depression, and anxiety without the support they desperately need. This issue is deeply personal to us, and it pushes us to take action so their sacrifices are not forgotten.

Thousands of veterans are enduring long wait times, overwhelmed systems, and disconnected services that do not meet their urgent needs. According to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, approximately 37,000 veterans experience homelessness in America on any given night. Moreover, according to a report by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, about 11-20% of veterans who served in Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom suffer from PTSD.

It is crucial to recognize that housing support and mental health care should not be treated as separate issues. Integrating services is imperative for effectively addressing the complex challenges faced by veterans. We propose that Congress and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) prioritize a comprehensive, evidence-based approach to better align housing and mental health services.

A promising step toward such integration is expanding the HUD-Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH) program, which combines HUD vouchers with VA supportive services to ensure that veterans have access to both housing and mental health care. Enhanced investment in this and similar programs, alongside efforts to reduce bureaucratic hurdles, can create transformative change for our veteran community.

We call on Congress and relevant authorities to act urgently. Implementing coordinated strategies, reducing barriers, and streamlining processes can significantly improve the lives of those who have given so much for us. Their bravery and dedication demand our utmost support.

Please join us in standing up for those who have stood for our nation. Let’s ensure that every veteran has the opportunity to live with dignity and receive the mental health care they rightfully deserve. Sign this petition to demand change and action now.
