On a typical day, my friend was hit by a car while on his bike. The incident resulted in minor injuries, but the brutal shock and subsequent fear it caused is something that will never fade. This personal encounter raises alarming concerns about bike safety all over the world.

Today, we see an increasing number of urban dwellers turning towards more sustainable means of transport, with bicycles topping the list. But this healthy and environmentally friendly mode of transport comes with risks. Every year, around 2% of motor vehicle crash deaths are cyclists, illustrating the pressing need for improved bike safety measures on a global scale (Source: Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, Highway Loss Data Institute, 2018).

We are thus appealing to establish more rigorous bike safety measures across all countries. These include but are not limited to more well-designed bike lanes, better infrastructure that separates motor vehicles from bikes, and rigorous driver education about sharing roads with cyclists. We must ensure that cycling is both encouraged and can be undertaken safely in our communities.
