The Issue

Open Letter to the People of Waukesha County: My name is Evan Fassbender. I am a resident of Waukesha County and a person with disabilities protected under the ADA and HIPAA. For more than 12 years, I have tried to navigate the Waukesha County Courthouse. What I have experienced is a system that is confusing, hard to reach by phone, full of complex legal language, and often dismissive toward people who need extra help. When someone has disabilities that affect their ability to process information, manage stress, or communicate clearly, dense forms and unhelpful responses are not just inconvenient — they are real barriers. The court exists to serve the public. Right now, it is failing many of the people who need it most.

I am calling for simple, reasonable changes:

 1) Clear public phone numbers that actually connect you to the right person.

 2) Plain-English explanations and forms that regular people can understand.

3) Basic respect and patience for citizens with disabilities.

These are not radical demands. They are the minimum for equal access under the Americans with Disabilities Act. In a place where justice and fairness should prevail, it is paramount that everyone is provided with understandable information and services that are easily accessible. Furthermore, studies indicate that nearly one in five adults in the United States lives with a disability. Consequently, accessible government services are not just a nice-to-have; they are a necessity to uphold the rights of over 60 million people countrywide.

Implementing these basic changes not only aligns with federal laws but also promotes dignity and independence for all individuals. If you have also struggled to get help at the courthouse, or if you believe government should be usable by everyone, please share and sign this petition. The more of us who speak up, the harder it becomes to ignore. Every signature amplifies the need for a more accessible courthouse, fostering a community where every citizen can exercise their right to public government services without hurdles. Together, let’s make our voices heard and push for a courthouse that serves everyone with equal respect and clarity.
