The Issue

In 2024 I was punched in the face, I reported to this Sussex Police who took 2 years to bring the case to the CPS so now a charge cannot be applied. I have been let down by the very system that is supposed to support & protect us. Many women do not report violent crime because they know justice won’t be served. Some are murdered. This personal experience opened my eyes to the numerous gaps in our domestic abuse laws here in England — gaps that leave countless others as vulnerable as I once was.

Domestic abuse affects over 2 million people across the UK each year, with 1 in 4 women and 1 in 6 men experiencing it at some point in their lives. Despite such alarming statistics, our current legal framework often falls short of providing the necessary support and protection to victims. It is essential to address these shortcomings to ensure the safety and well-being of individuals affected by domestic abuse.

One pressing issue is the lack of consistency in how domestic abuse cases are treated across local authorities. The patchwork of support services and legal responses leads to uneven protection for victims depending on where they live. To combat this, we must push for uniform standards in handling domestic abuse cases by establishing a national framework that outlines clear and consistent procedures for law enforcement and support services.

Moreover, there is an urgent need for comprehensive training for police officers and legal professionals who deal with these sensitive cases. Often, a lack of understanding about the dynamics of domestic abuse results in dismissals or mishandlings that can further endanger the victim. Mandatory training could lead to better outcomes in handling these situations with the empathy and seriousness they deserve.

It's also crucial to increase funding for domestic abuse support services. These organizations provide critical aid such as emergency housing, legal aid, and counseling. With adequate funding, they can better support victims in rebuilding their lives and escaping abusive situations.

By signing this petition, you support a call to action for the UK government to take definitive steps in reinforcing the domestic abuse legislation. Together, we can advocate for stronger laws and more effective support systems that ensure the safety and dignity of every individual affected by domestic abuse. Let us transform my experience — and that of so many others — into a catalyst for change. Please sign this petition to improve domestic abuse laws in England and protect those in need.
