Improve conditions at DPS Gurgaon for better student learning
The Issue
A Constructive Suggestion Letter to DPS Gurgaon (Sector 45) Administration
All three parents, their children and staff share a common goal: preparing students to become responsible, aware, and capable global citizens. With this shared vision in mind, we would like to respectfully present a set of constructive suggestions based on student and parent feedback. These are intended to support the continued growth and improvement of the school environment.
Facilities and Infrastructure
1. The condition of the washrooms is a major concern for many students. This can also often be seen as a topic of discussion in the parents’ group. Most of the time, facilities such as taps, or stall door locks are broken or unfit for use. Additionally, several tissues and waste is left behind and cleanliness is not always properly maintained. Students, instead of being punished for disfiguring school facilities in the washrooms, should be made to understand the harm behind this in a gentle way, instead of a teacher just entering the class and scolding the students for what they have done.
2. In some classrooms, air conditioners don’t work, and in others, there are even problems like holes or leaks in the roof. These conditions make it uncomfortable to study, especially during extreme weather. The school buildings and facilities need proper maintenance and repair so that students can learn in a safe and comfortable environment.
Digital Footprint
3. Although the school has well integrated digital tools, the systems still have room for improvement. An instance being that the school has, more than once, held workshops by Google for Education partners (e.g. Viksit Bharat) and you have been invited to various events, such as the summit on Thursday, 16th July 2026. However, the school has never implemented any Google for Education features. Google, while being much more convenient to use, often also offers more features, while being free of cost - Google for Education Fundamentals: (https://edu.google.com/intl/ALL_in/workspace-for-education/editions/compare-editions/ just like the school’s current Microsoft for Education plan. Google Workspace for Education offers comparable functionality and may provide a more familiar interface for many students (as majority of them utilise Google tools) while remaining free under the Fundamentals edition.
4. Students often struggle with catching up on missed work, or doing the homework. Although classmates’ notebooks can be used, a much more reliable source would be to upload all classwork and homework on a portal like the school’s existing CampusCare portal or Google Classroom (free of cost). Currently, all features of the school portal are not utilised either, for example, Entab also offers an attendance page on the site which is almost never updated. Monday Test syllabus should also be uploaded. This would make studying more organised, and reduce confusion.
Scheduling and Timings
5. Enrichment periods are not always used efficiently or are not scheduled formally. They could be replaced with one additional class period on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. On Mondays, the regular Monday timetable could continue and on Fridays the regular timetable, with an Activity period in place of Enrichment for planned activities such as board decoration and peer education.
6. Teachers expect students to fill their water, go to the washroom, talk to their friends, etc. during a 10-minute and a 20-minute break. The lengths of these breaks should be at least 15-20 minutes and 30-40 minutes respectively. Below are proposed timings to make this possible. These timings perfectly fit into the existing school hours of 7.30 AM - 1.50 PM.
Student Well-being
7. The way teachers and students interact has a big impact on the learning environment. There have been times when students feel they are reprimanded without fully understanding the reason, which can feel unfair and stressful. While discipline is important, it should be maintained with mutual respect. If teachers treat students with understanding and respect, students are much more likely to respond the same way. A more positive approach would make school a better place for everyone.
8. Monday Tests should take place once every term, i.e. Monday Test 1 in the middle of Term 1 and Monday Test 2 in the middle of term 2. All of them should take place together, i.e. be over in one week. This decreases the constant pressure on the students to overperform eventually leading to stress and emotional problems. Yes, it is true that constant assessment is a key to success. However, this can be via class tests or interactive quizzes (such as Baamboozle or Blooket, which would also make learning more fun).
School Governance
9. We suggest shifting from “sanctioned leaves” to “informed leaves” for absences, where parents notify the school in advance. Students would remain responsible for completing missed work. This approach balances flexibility with accountability. If a student has informed their class teacher of the leave, it does not go under unsanctioned leave. It is the students’ responsibility to catch up on work they missed, hence, they should be allowed to take leaves, if they acknowledge this responsibility, for holidays and gatherings etc.
10. Often when students or parents (casually or formally) say anything to teachers or school staff, or raise a concern, they are not given a satisfying answer. For example, a short while ago, 130 students signed a petition for the amount of PE slots to be increased, or at least a reason to be given for missed PE slots. A document of six pages, elaborating on students’ concerns along with prints of CBSE circulars where specific bye-laws were highlighted, and the signatures was placed on the reps table (B block, 3rd floor) by one of the students of the school. At dispersal that day, the document was in a corner of the reps table. It was not there the next day, and no response was received by the students. An official “suggestions box" or online forum should be made to make it easier for students and parents to share their suggestions, where links can be shared for other students to “Upvote” suggestions. Every single post is responded to by a member of staff. Additionally, reps stands for representatives, yet the representatives of the students are teachers. Class reps should also consist of one student from each section, known as the class president, or class rep, who have an equal say as the teacher reps (and is different from class monitor).
11. Students arriving late with a valid parent note (with reason, apology and signature) should be allowed entry through a structured system, rather than being denied access after a fixed time. This ensures learning time is not unnecessarily lost while maintaining discipline.
We hope these suggestions are considered and acknowledged. It would be greatly appreciated if a response in the form of assembly or message could be shared with students and parents, outlining any planned actions or considerations.
We understand that some changes may require time and planning, and we would be glad to see gradual implementation, latest by the academic session 2027-28 or after the winter break if feasible. These changes are intended to help not just the holistic development of the student but also the academic. They foster a more supportive, appreciative, and understanding environment for the student to grow and prosper in.
