My brother has been incarcerated at 201 Poplar, the jail in downtown Memphis, for almost 11 months, despite his innocence. The conditions he and many others endure every day are not only inhumane but dangerous. I am starting this petition to demand immediate intervention and reforms to protect the lives of those who are incarcerated there.

Inside 201 Poplar, inmates face unbearable conditions. The jail lacks proper ventilation, leaving inmates without air, especially during the sweltering summer months. Flooding is a constant problem, exacerbated by pipes that frequently burst, resulting in cells contaminated with feces and urine. These unsanitary conditions are not only dehumanizing but pose serious health risks.

Even the basic rights to court hearings and due process are affected. The courts have been closed for numerous periods, denying inmates their right to justice. Worse yet, there's a horrifying report circulating on social media about diesel fuel spilling onto the kitchen floor, further endangering the health and safety of inmates and staff.

The frequency of inmate deaths at 201 Poplar is alarming and unacceptable. Each death represents a failure of the system to ensure the safety and well-being of the people in its care. If we don't act now, the number of deaths and the health risks will only continue to rise.

We cannot ignore these urgent issues. The authorities must take immediate action to repair the infrastructure, ensure access to basic needs and services, and hold those responsible for maintaining these facilities to account.
