Improve communication with bereaved families in healthcare

Improve communication with bereaved families in healthcare
The Issue
I lost my daughter in 2023, when she was only 4.5 months old. Since then, I have been painfully reminded of her loss through medical communications that have persisted, even though they should not. Receiving reminders for her 2/3 year old vaccinations, despite her passing, keeps reopening emotional wounds. Even more distressing, after experiencing a miscarriage in May, I continue to receive correspondence about my 'pregnancy' five months later. I was even asked to collect 'pregnancy tissue' from my miscarriage three months after cremation. This ongoing insensitivity needs to change.
The healthcare system's communication protocols with bereaved families are in urgent need of reform. Every day, families like mine face emotional distress and suffering because of thoughtless and automated healthcare communications. The medical community must show compassion and sensitivity to families dealing with such profound grief.
I propose that healthcare providers implement a responsive and sensitive communication system. This should include determining accurate databases that flag and halt inappropriate correspondence once a loss is reported, enabling families to opt-out of certain communications easily. Additionally, staff training programs focusing on empathy and grief management would ensure that they handle sensitive situations with the care the families deserve.
According to the CDC, 1 in 4 pregnancies end in miscarriage. That's a significant number of people who could be affected by this failure in communication. These statistics underline the importance of getting this right. We can't change the past, but we can certainly change how we handle these situations in the future.
Grieving families are already carrying a heavy emotional burden. It is imperative that the healthcare system supports them by preventing unnecessary distress. Please help ensure that no other family has to suffer through the administrative oversight and insensitivity that I have gone through.
Sign this petition to demand change from healthcare providers across the nation. Let's create a system that truly cares for bereaved families.
