Improve CNU's Title IX Office

The Issue

An article was released on April 14th 2023 by the Virginian Pilot regarding how students were affected by CNU's Title IX Office. You can find the article here.

On behalf of Where is the Line?, the CNU Student Organization for sexual assault survivors, we are deeply disheartened by the recent revelations regarding the office of Title IX at CNU. Our mission is to better our campus for future captains and become trustworthy advocates for all citizens. We want to ensure that CNU is an environment where survivors can speak out and feel comfortable seeking help. The recent actions of Title IX do not align with our mission. All acts that violate the privacy and well-being of survivors have no place at our school. We stand for the anonymity of survivors and anyone that utilizes Title IX’s services. We encourage all individuals struggling with the information brought forward to utilize CNU’s counseling services or local resources such as The Center and Fear2Freedom, as well as the resources we have linked in our Instagram bio.

Brooke, Caroline, and Emily have come up with points they would like to see changed at CNU and we are sharing them with you here. You can read their full letter here.

  1. Clarification on Policy 9055, and how CNU will handle cases involving perpetrators that are seniors.
  2. A revamping of how sensitive case files are sent in a way that ensures FERPA and case protections are met, that is shared with the University community.
  3. An upholding of the parameters put in place by university-governed no-contact orders.
  4. Increased oversight and accountability for the Title IX office staff, including the identification of reasonable ways students can express any concerns to parties independent of the office.
  5. A public acknowledgment of our stories, Christopher Newport’s role in them, and the changes that administration will put in place to address them, including a critical look at the current staff in the Title IX office and their role in our cases.

Going forward, we would like CNU’s Title IX to respond to the article, take accountability for their actions, and provide an action plan for the future of Title IX and how they will restore confidence in their office. We ask that you sign in support of this endeavor and help us in being the change we want to see.
