Improve care and training in UK psychiatric units - Stop the neglect!

The Issue

Overall:

Myself and thousands of others throughout the UK have been or are currently being subjected to abuse, neglect and mistreatment whilst in the care of psychiatric hospitals all over the UK. This goes from being humiliated/ bullied by staff, forced treatment upon unsectioned patients, unrecognised risks around the wards that leads to harm of patients, illigal restraints and more...

I believe this is due to the lack of training, permanent staff and overall care in these facilities.

If this lack of care (and at some points just blatant abuse) continues to happen in these units there will be even more preventable deaths and permanent psychological damage to current and future patients.

These issues have been happening for year, are continuing to happen and NEEDS to change. Too many young lives have been lost and too much trauma has been made at point that could have been COMPLETELY avoided. I am not willing to stand by and let it happen any more.

My personal story

To note: I thought it could potentially benifit and give more of an insight to the lack of care and abuse I am talking about if I shared some key points of my experiences various stays in psychiatric hospitals through the years. These incidents cause me years of psychological harm and unfortunately I am not alone is this struggle. These exact types of things happen consistently for the majority of patients within a psychiatric unit setting.

What I am about to share is only a small selection off a long list of mistreatment through my time in hospitals. TW to those who are vulnerable.

  1. The Burrows HDU, Berrywood Hospital: After an incident I was subjected to a very prolonged restraint which included being secluded, medicated and held on the floor, facedown by up to 8 members of staff who which shouted abuse at me, including "stop fu**ing moving/crying" (I was in an active panic attack throughout. Face down restraints are now illigal due to the danger of them ESPECIALLY in a panic attack) then was left to my own devises thereafter. There was no after care or increase in observation. I was NOT sectioned.
  2. The Burrows HDU, Berrywood Hospital: I had hit a wall and potentially broken my hand. They refused to give me medical treatment or take me to a&e. This happened multiple times. Both in The Burrows and The Sett Hospital.
  3. The Burrows HDU, Berrywood Hospital: I was granted access to a crafts cupboard which contained sharps/blades then was personally blamed for taking them and self harming because "I should know im not allowed in there".
  4. The Burrows HDU, Berrywood Hospital: was held against a wall and nearly sexually assaulted by another patient. Nothing was done or noted.
  5. The Campbell Centre, Milton Keynes: A staff member who was on my one to one onservations complained about not wanting to care for me because "she didn't like me and I don't sleep" infront of me to another staff member.
  6. The Campbell Centre, Milton Keynes: Assured my family that they were well equiped to manage my eating disorder but did not intervene for over two weeks despite my rapid declining physical health which kead to me having to stay in general hospital for nearly a month.
  7. Huntercombe Hospital, Maidenhead: One to one observation staff members falling asleep which led to me being able to seriously harm myself (this also happend in other hospitals)
  8. Huntercombe Hospital, Maidenhead: I was left to starve myself for over a week, despite being admitted for an eating disorder and was only placed on a meal plan when they saw how much weight I had dropped.
  9. The Priory, North London: Myself and all patients had free range and access to various things including boiling water, chemicals and sharp object on a daily basis. None of these were monitored at any time or removed. Patients (including myself) were free to harm ourselves at any point with minimal intervention and when they did intervene it included being locked in our bedrooms for hours - days on end.
  10. The Sett Hospital, Northampton: Was left to starve myself for days/weeks with no intervention despite me begging them for help. I was told that they would only intervene if I collapsed.
  11. The Sett Hospital, Northampton: Was immediately discharged (kicked out) without warning or a care plan  in place for smashing a glass object that was found, easily accessed on the ward and self harmed with it.

I will leave the list there. Like I said before, this is only a very small selection of a huge list of neglect I encountered whilst in these so called "places of safety'' and unless something is done to stop these mispractices, nothing will change. Patients in hospital are often young and VERY vulnerable. We deserve care, compassion and PROPER treatment in order to heal and get better. I am yet to meet a single person who has been admitted into one of these hospitals to feel like they have benefited from them and left without trauma or their illnesses actually being worse than they were before which is absolutely disgusting. The mistreatment NEEDS to stop.
