The Issue

I’m a high school student currently involved in the Peace Warrior's Global Youth Program 2025, a community initiative focused on creating positive local change. California residents deserve clean, healthy air to breathe. Unfortunately, rising wildfire smoke and heavy traffic congestion are causing dangerous air pollution that harms our health and quality of life. Children, seniors, and people with respiratory issues are especially vulnerable.

I am reaching out to address an issue that affects every person in our city: poor air quality. Between the rising number of wildfire smoke events and constant traffic congestion, California residents are regularly exposed to harmful air pollution. This problem not only threatens our health but also our environment and future.

According to data from the California Air Resources Board, Fremont has experienced multiple days of unhealthy air quality each year, especially during wildfire season. Additionally, the high volume of cars during school drop-offs, rush hours, and weekend traffic worsens the situation. Students, children, and the elderly are particularly vulnerable to these conditions. Prolonged exposure to pollutants can lead to serious health problems like asthma, heart disease, and other respiratory issues, especially for kids like me growing up in this city.

That’s why I propose two simple but powerful actions. First, I suggest adding more street trees and planting native greenery around major traffic intersections and school zones. Trees naturally filter pollutants and provide shade that helps cool streets. Second, Fremont could partner with local tech companies and schools to create a community air-quality monitoring app that uses low-cost sensors placed around neighborhoods. This app would provide real-time pollution alerts and personalized health tips, encouraging residents to make safer choices and giving the city data to target pollution hotspots more effectively. This can make a lasting impact on our community’s health. These steps may seem small, but they can reduce emissions and improve health over time.

Thank you for your time and your commitment to making California a better place for all of us. I hope you’ll consider taking action on this important issue. Please consider sharing with family and friends!
