Improve bus stops in Hollingdean for the elderly
Improve bus stops in Hollingdean for the elderly
The Issue
My grandma is 90 years old and has been a resident of Hollingdean for 56 years. In 2015, she had a stroke which has since made her more wobbly on her feet. The recent changes to the bus route in our area have deeply distressed her. She used to travel independently around the city, but now her confidence is diminished because the new bus stops are not close enough to the shops and they lack seats and shelters. This simple change has had a significant impact on her daily life.
But this isn't just about my grandma. Many elderly residents and those with disabilities in Hollingdean are likely facing similar struggles. The lack of accommodations at the bus stops means that they are unable to travel with the same ease and independence they once enjoyed. This situation creates unnecessary distress and can lead to increased isolation for vulnerable members of our community.
According to the World Health Organization, accessible public transportation is vital for ensuring that older adults and people with disabilities can maintain independence and participate in society. Bus stops that are too far from key destinations, and which do not provide basic amenities like seating and shelter, contribute to a decrease in mobility and access to essential services.
We are calling on local transportation authorities to review the recent changes to the bus routes in Hollingdean and to take immediate action to improve the facilities at bus stops. Improvements could include moving stops closer to key locations, installing benches and providing shelters to protect from inclement weather.
Please help us to ensure that all residents, regardless of their age or physical ability, can continue to navigate our city safely and comfortably. Sign this petition to make our community more inclusive and supportive for everyone.
