Improve Bicycle Safety and Driver Education in Sebring, Florida

Improve Bicycle Safety and Driver Education in Sebring, Florida
The Issue
This petition begins with the tragic story of Fran McConnell, who was tragically killed while riding her bicycle in Sun N Lake community, Sebring, Florida, on March 24, 2024 by a hit-and-run driver. This incident makes it personal and painfully clear that our roads need to be safer for our bicycle riders, and the need for enhanced driver education about safety and awareness is essential.
Every year, approximately 800 bicyclists are killed and over 49,000 are injured in the United States as per National Highways Traffic Safety Administration [NHTSA, 2017 report]. In Florida alone, the Florida Department of Transportation reports hundreds of bicyclist fatalities per year, a disproportionate amount considering its population size.
We're asking local and regional authorities in Sebring, Florida, to implement immediate steps to increase safety for bicycle riders. This could take the form of increased signage regarding bicycling zones, the creation of dedicated, safe bike lanes and better education programs for young drivers about the importance of bicycle awareness.
We hope this effort can be a part of Fran’s legacy. As my sister's memory serves as a reminder of this urgent issue, we can help prevent any other families from experiencing such devastating loss. Please, sign this petition. Not only for Fran, but for all bicyclists who share the road with motor vehicles every day.
