The Issue
When I first arrived on Sanibel Island, I was enamored by its breathtaking beauty and strong commitment to environmental stewardship. It wasn't just the sandy beaches or the lush greenery; it was the community's dedication to preserving the delicate balance between human life and nature that set Sanibel apart. However, recent hurricanes like Ian, Helene, and Milton have dealt severe blows to our island, altering much of what we had cherished. Yet, we are a resilient community, determined to fight back and restore our island's vibrancy and accessibility.

Donax Road Beach is one of the unique access points on Sanibel Island that draws both residents and visitors for moments of peace, reflection, and recreation. Unfortunately, the damages caused by the hurricanes have not only diminished the aesthetic beauty of this natural landscape but have also made access increasingly difficult and uneven.

The Donax Road beach access on Sanibel Island is currently being maintained at a noticeably lower standard than neighboring access points such as Nerita Street and Fulgar Street. While those access points include amenities like bike racks, ADA beach mats, trash and recycling bins, and updated landscaping, Donax Road lacks these basic features and instead includes a cattle guard primarily serving vehicular access. We understand and support the need for vehicle access for beach maintenance and emergency use. However, this should not come at the expense of safety, accessibility, and aesthetic quality for residents and visitors. In fact, because Donax Road serves both vehicles and pedestrians, it presents an opportunity to be one of the most thoughtfully designed and visually appealing access points on the island.

We respectfully request that the City of Sanibel:

  • Install bike racks, trash and recycling bins
  • Add ADA-compliant beach mat access
  • Upgrade landscaping and overall appearance
  • Improve safety and separation between pedestrian and vehicular use

Sanibel is known for its natural beauty and thoughtful stewardship. Donax Road beach access should reflect those same standards. We ask the City Council and Mayor to prioritize improvements so that all beach access points are treated equitably and responsibly.

Equal access, safety, and beauty should not depend on which street you enter from.
