Improve Accessibility of SNAP/EBT for Families Battling Food Insecurity

The Issue

Speaking from one of my group members' personal experiences, their family has struggled with access to SNAP, otherwise known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, and EBT, also known as the Electronic Benefits Transfer. This challenged her ability to receive healthy food on the table, an experience sadly shared by many other families, not only in our community but across the country.

Around 10.5% of households in the United States faced food insecurity in 2019, equating to approximately 13.7 million households (source: USDA). SNAP, a vital lifeline for those struggling to afford food, must be more accessible. Despite its potential, difficulties in the application process and various eligibility requirements often hinder struggling families from benefiting from the program.

Our group's and many others struggles and the difficulty of managing food insecurity drives us to want to make a change. We must convince our local government to simplify the SNAP/EBT application process and ensure secure access to nutritional support for all families who need it. My group believes that no family should struggle with having healthy food on the table, especially in this economy!
