The Issue

I live in Basingstoke with my partner, who is disabled, and every day I witness the challenges he faces just to navigate our town. To see him struggle due to inadequate infrastructure is heart-wrenching, especially knowing that these obstacles are entirely preventable with the right measures in place. No one should have to deal with these unnecessary hardships when simple improvements can provide a more inclusive, accessible environment.

Currently, Basingstoke's paths and walkways are anything but accessible. Many routes are either obstructed or simply do not exist, making it difficult for individuals with mobility issues to move around freely and safely. These limitations not only affect the day-to-day life of people like my partner but also older adults and residents with temporary injuries or parents with prams.

According to the latest statistics from the Disabled Living Foundation, around 13.9 million people in the UK live with a disability—accounting for nearly 20% of the population. This significant number highlights the urgent need for towns like Basingstoke to prioritize accessibility and ensure that all residents can enjoy their community without hindrance.

We are calling on the Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council to take immediate action to address these issues. The council must conduct a thorough audit of all pedestrian paths and public spaces, identifying areas needing improvement. Following this, a comprehensive plan should be developed to expand existing sidewalks, create new pathways where necessary, and ensure all pedestrian infrastructure meets the current accessibility standards.

Moreover, public transportation routes should be fully accessible, with low-floor buses, proper signage, and clearly marked assistance points. Initiatives like these can significantly enhance the quality of life for disabled individuals, enabling them to participate more fully in society.

By investing in accessibility improvements, Basingstoke can become a model town for inclusivity, showing that it values every citizen equally. This change is not only about improving mobility; it’s about enhancing dignity and independence for all residents.

Join me in urging the Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council to prioritize these changes. Please sign this petition and support the movement towards a more accessible Basingstoke for everyone.
