Improve Access to Mental Health Resources for Our Veterans and Active Service Members

Improve Access to Mental Health Resources for Our Veterans and Active Service Members
The Issue
I've grown up amidst the harsh realities of America's involvement in the wars of Afghanistan and Iraq. The scars these conflicts have left on our service men and women are not only physical but mental. The aftermath is apparent in the rising number of homeless veterans and servicemember-related suicides. Friends and family of mine continue to serve, with their mental health a constant concern. The lack of resources for both physical and mental health scars is a concern for many.
America's servicemen and women confront a mental health crisis that demands immediate intervention. The Department of Veterans Affairs reports that roughly 20 veterans die by suicide each day. Moreover, 30 percent of active duty and reserve military personnel deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan have a mental health condition requiring treatment. However, less than 50 percent of returning veterans in need receive any mental health treatment, as per the National Council for Behavioural Health.
It is a disservice to those sacrificing for our nation to leave their mental wellbeing unattended. Improved access to mental health resources needs to be a priority, not an afterthought. Our veterans and active service members deserve comprehensive mental health services to address their unique mental health challenges, from PTSD to anxiety disorder and depression.
We call for a strategic review of mental health services for both veterans and those still in active duty. Our appeal is for the expansion of mental health resources, increased funding, and initiatives for quicker, easier access to the necessary help.
It's time to ensure those who protect our freedom get the care they deserve and desperately need. Please, sign this petition to show your support for improving mental health resources for our veterans and active service members.
