Improve access to gender-affirming care in India

Improve access to gender-affirming care in India
The Issue
In India, transgender and gender diverse individuals face significant challenges in accessing gender-affirming care, documentation, and healthcare services. Despite advancements in legal recognition and rights for transgender persons, many continue to struggle with institutional barriers that impede their ability to lead fulfilling lives. To address these issues effectively, it is crucial to understand the experiences and specific needs of transgender and gender diverse communities in India.
Currently, many transgender individuals experience discrimination, prejudice, and a lack of understanding from healthcare providers. Healthcare services are often not tailored to meet their unique needs, leading to inadequate care. This situation is further compounded by the absence of legal recognition or difficulty in obtaining necessary documentation, which is essential for accessing various social benefits and entitlements.
A comprehensive survey that captures the lived experiences of these communities is necessary. It will not only highlight the gaps and challenges in accessing gender-affirming care but also inform policies that aim to alleviate these issues. Such surveys can provide data-driven insights to improve healthcare services and address the stigma and discrimination encountered by these individuals.
We call upon the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and other relevant authorities in India to commission a nationwide survey focused on the needs and experiences of transgender and gender diverse persons. The data should be used to develop guidelines and training programs for healthcare providers, and to simplify the process of documentation and accessing healthcare services.
Your signature can make a significant impact. By signing this petition, you pledge your support for better healthcare access and equitable treatment for transgender and gender diverse individuals in India. Please sign and help us bring about this much-needed change.
