Improve Access to Care by Funding Nurse Practitioners

Improve Access to Care by Funding Nurse Practitioners
The Issue
Ontario missed the April 1, 2026, deadline to publicly fund nurse practitioner (NP) services, leaving some Ontarians paying out of pocket for care that should be covered.
Call on Premier Doug Ford and Health Minister Sylvia Jones to implement a publicly funded, no–user fee model for NP-led primary care.
More than 3.3 million Ontarians lack a primary care provider. While the government has committed to connecting everyone to care by 2029, this goal cannot be achieved without fully leveraging NPs.
Other provinces have already implemented publicly funded NP models, now it’s Ontario’s turn.
NPAO is ready to work with the government to deliver a flexible, sustainable model that ensures all Ontarians can access care without paying out of pocket.
