Inspired by personal concern, many individuals resonate with the need for an essential change: the implementation of mandatory identity verification for account creation across all social media platforms. Our need for this change stems from the recurring nuisance and serious damages caused by fake or troll accounts. Without stringent verification measures, offenders are free to manipulate the system, create alternate accounts after being blocked or reported, and continue their campaigns of online harassment, trolling, and cyberbullying.

According to the Cyberbullying Research Center, 37.3% of 12-18 years old in the U.S. have been cyberbullied in their lifetime (Hinduja and Patchin, 2021). The same study found that 63% of those who were cyberbullied were targeted through fake accounts. The anonymity provided by these platforms not only empowers these predators but also discourages victims from seeking justice as it creates obstacles in tracking down the perpetrators.

Imposing a mandatory identity verification process creates a safer digital environment. It discourages the creation of bogus accounts, thereby making the virtual world less threatening. Online accountability promotes responsible usage and instills safety and trust within the community.
