Impose Full Penalties for Severe Animal Cruelty Acts

Impose Full Penalties for Severe Animal Cruelty Acts
The issue
My heart broke as I received a distressing call about a matter on Sunday evening, marking 13th April 2025. a day that will forever remain etched our memories as wildlife rescuers for wildcare nsw. Serving as a licensed macropod carer myself, I have sadly witnessed countless instances of brutal harm inflicted upon our native kangaroos. On this particular day, on Millynn Road, Bywong, a brutally injured live kangaroo was discovered down an embankment, a rope chillingly tied around its fragile neck. The call received will live on in the lives of the volunteers who dealt with the matter. From the phone line to the rescuers, wildlife hospital, our macropod Cooardinator & the member of the public who found her.
Today, I want to draw attention to an upcoming court case at Queanbeyan courthouse nsw on 26/5/25 wherein a man stands accused of this heinous act. Animal cruelty is a serious misdemeanour under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1979 in our region, and if found guilty, an individual can face a severe fines or imprisonment. However, the application of these penalties is often inconsistent, sometimes resulting in light sentences that do nothing to deter this terrible behaviour.
I implore you, think of the severity of the crime, the painful cries of an innocent creature, the unabashed disregard for nature’s beauty. This heartbreaking incident serves as a chilling reminder of the urgent need for stricter enforcement of animal cruelty laws. Let us ensure this individual, if found guilty, is handed down the maximum penalty, thus sending a clear message to society about the gravity and consequences of animal cruelty. Let’s speak for animals that don’t have a voice.
In making your decision whether to sign this petition or not, I would like you to picture this: a beautiful, innocent kangaroo, writhing in pain, and imagine if that were your pet dog or cat. Let's stand up for our native wildlife. Let's say no to animal cruelty. Please, sign this petition to hopefully see this individual face the consequences of this sick act of unnecessary cruelty & violence towards an innocent animal. And for all the acts of cruelty towards animals particularly Australian wildlife from here on in. This can’t go on.
