It all began when a cat appeared in the bushes out front of my house. He was abandoned, scared and suffering frequent seizures. A being so loving, seeking only reassurance and warmth in the shadow of his imminent fits. Having fed him for months, I was eventually able to bring him into safety. Every day, it breaks my heart to think how he must have felt alone and scared, not knowing what was happening. This personal experience told me how tragically widespread the issue of abandoned pets is.

In the US alone, approximately 6.5 million companion animals enter shelters every year, of which around 710,000 are strays reclaimed by owners but about 2.7 million are animals not reclaimed [source: ASPCA]. These staggering statistics echo the heartbreaking implications of pet abandonment. Therefore, we urge for laws that impose criminal charges and fines on pet owners who dispose their companions without ensuring a safe and secure placement for them. While the punishment suggested should not be excessively harsh, it needs to be significant enough to discourage thoughtless animal abandonment.

For the sake of our helpless companions who offer us nothing but unconditional love, let's ensure they are treated humanely. To create a world where animals aren’t left to fend for themselves because their owners simply decided they didn't want them anymore, each signature counts!
