Impose 1-2% Wealth Tax on the UK's Wealthiest 2% to Fund our Future
The Issue
As a steadfast labour voter who just cancelled their membership, and a watcher of @GarysEconomics I am increasingly distressed to see the economic burden fall on the shoulders of those who can least support it. As reported by the ONS, the UK's wealthiest 2%, astonishingly, have control over 17% of the nation's household wealth.
To bring this into sharper focus, a scant 1% owns almost as much wealth as a combined total of our population's lower 80%. Our economy continues to struggle and yet we ignore the potential resources resting in the hands of the few.
How can my children ever move out of my home, at this rate they will still be with us in their 40s or maybe never.
The proposal here is not to impoverish the wealthy or discourage economic ambition.
Instead, we suggest a modest annual wealth tax of 1-2% on net assets exceeding £10 million. It's important to stress that this tax modification would not affect the standard of living for our wealthiest citizens, but significantly enhance the opportunities for those less fortunate. With such changes in place, we could potentially raise tens of billions annually.
These funds could be devoted to investment in education, healthcare, technology, and other essential sectors critical for our nation's growth and welfare. By shifting the tax imposition from middle income to high net worth individuals, we aren’t disadvantaging a group that needs every penny, rather redistributing the resources to invigorate the economy and build a more equitable society.
It's time to acknowledge that rebalancing our economic system is crucial, not as a matter of class struggle, but as a means of ensuring the survival and prosperity of our nation. We implore you to envisage this move not as a penalty, but rather as an investment in a future that bears fruit for all, from the wealthiest to the most disadvantaged.
Please sign this petition and support this proposal for a fairer, more prosperous UK. Let's work together to make our future strong and sustainable.
