Implementing Self-defence training in the PE curriculum for girls
The Issue
Imagine the scene on the streets of Chorley as young girls navigate their daily lives, trying to make their way to school or simply return home. They are often targeted, harassed, and followed by groups of boys on public transport or while walking alone. These boys shout degrading comments, film their reactions, and leave them feeling exposed and helpless. It is an intolerable situation that needs urgent attention. This is not just a problem for the girls experiencing this harassment, but an issue that the whole community must confront and resolve.
We propose a Comprehensive Community Safety & Education Initiative in Chorley starting with introducing self-defence and situational awareness training in the PE curriculum for girls from primary through to high school. These classes would equip them with practical skills to recognize potential dangers, de-escalate threatening situations, and defend themselves if necessary. Such skills are invaluable in fostering a sense of autonomy and enhanced safety, empowering our young women to confidently reclaim their freedom without fear.
But addressing this issue requires a two-pronged approach. Alongside empowering young girls, we must also educate young boys on respect and boundaries from an early age. We propose targeted educational modules that teach boys about empathy, respect, and the importance of respecting a girl's right to independence. This education should start in primary school to instil these values early and challenge the toxic behaviors that contribute to misogynistic culture.
Statistics have shown that interventions like self-defence training can significantly reduce the vulnerability of individuals to assault and harassment.
Change begins with education and empowerment. Let us come together as a community to protect our daughters and educate our sons. Our streets and public spaces should be places of safety, learning, and growth for every child. By signing this petition, you can help make this vision a reality and contribute to laying the groundwork for a safer, more equitable Chorley.
Sign this petition if you believe in protecting our girls and educating our boys for a safer future.
