Implementing an ASL minor at BYU
Implementing an ASL minor at BYU
The Issue
BYU has consistently ranked the #1 college in the United States for number of foreign languages taught, ranging from Hmong to Polish. This amounts to 84 regularly-taught languages, with at least 121 languages spoken on campus. Out of these languages, many have become majors and minors. Then why not include an essential language such as American Sign Language? BYU's mission "is to assist individuals in their quest for perfection and eternal life." To accomplish this goal, we seek to be understanding of our fellowman, which includes those in the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing communities. ASL Student Association is a huge on-campus club with BYUSA, in addition to the hundreds of students enrolled in ASL courses every semester. It is fundamentally clear that there is sufficient interest among the student body to warrant the creation of an ASL minor, at least. No, nearby programs are not sufficient. BYU students deserve access to programs that would change their lives. ASL is a visual form of communication that forges bridges of understanding and brings us closer to our goal of perfection and eternal life.
