Implementation of protected bicycle lanes nationwide

The Issue

As an avid cyclist, not only do I enjoy cycling greatly, but I am also a leading member of many bike patrol teams, a cycling event competitor, and I regularly travel by bike. Cycling is more than just a hobby—it is a fundamental part of my daily life. Unfortunately, cycling has a side that is fraught with dangers. I have lost 10 friends to tragic accidents involving motorized vehicles in 2025 alone. This reality underscores the urgent need for safer cycling infrastructure.

Implementing protected bicycle lanes across all states in the United States is a crucial step towards ensuring cyclists' safety. These lanes need to provide a safe distance of 3 meters (10 feet) between cyclists and motorized vehicles. This protection is vital to reducing the number of fatal and injurious accidents that occur each year. Statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration show an alarming number of cyclist fatalities annually. By creating protected lanes, we can begin to reverse this trend.

Moreover, introducing signals for cyclists at intersections and major roads is essential. Such measures allow cyclists to navigate safely, reducing the potential for accidents significantly. These signals should be standardized in every city across the nation, ensuring uniform safety protocols for cyclists everywhere.

The benefits of promoting cycling are manifold. Environmentally, cycling reduces emissions, contributing to a healthier planet. Economically, it lowers transportation costs for individuals, allowing them to spend less on fuel. Health-wise, cycling is a proven way to increase overall physical fitness, combating the onset of lifestyle-related diseases.

Furthermore, enabling the use of E-bikes alongside regular bicycles for nationwide travel expands accessibility for all, regardless of physical limitations. Everyone should have the opportunity to choose cycling as a means to enjoy cross-country travel.

Cycling should be a safe, viable, and enjoyable mode of transportation for everyone. I urge policymakers to implement these changes and support a healthier, safer, and more eco-friendly mode of transportation. Please sign this petition to advocate for the nationwide implementation of protected bicycle lanes and improved safety measures for cyclists in the United States.
