The Paris 2024 women’s skeet shooting competition left many heartbroken and disillusioned, including myself, as we watched a significant controversy unfold; where outcome determination came under question due to human error. The absence of technology-assisted decision making in this sport was harshly exposed, and we cannot stand by passively waiting for a repetition of such a scenario.

Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology, widely acclaimed in other sports such as football, has proven itself to be an equitable, transparent, and reliable tool for decision-making processes in sport. Yet, Olympic Skeet Shooting continues to be devoid of this beneficial platform.

The International Shooting Sport Federation reported a growth in the global audience of 10% in recent years, demonstrating an increased general interest and a broader impact when questionable decisions are made (Source: ISSF).

Our proposal is not to completely replace the existing human element involved in decision-making within the sport, we recognize and respect the importance of tradition in skeet shooting. However, we urge the International Olympic Committee to establish proper integration of VAR technology in skeet shooting competitions to reduce or eliminate potential human error, ensuring the most accurate result and fairness in the sport we love so passionately.
