Our school district, like many others, regularly uses single-use plastic utensils. This practice leads to substantial plastic waste, impacting our environment negatively. It is reported that nearly 40 billion individual plastic utensils are used once and tossed away annually in the United States (Earth Day Network). The Exeter Township School District (ETSD) should not be contributing to this unsustainable practice, particularly given the increased recognition of the climate crisis and the importance of sustainable materials. As an educational institution, it is our responsibility to create an environmentally conscious future generation. By switching to metal silverware, we can demonstrate that small changes make a significant difference in reducing our carbon footprint. Furthermore, this change is easily adaptable and can serve as an educational opportunity for our students, promoting a more sustainable lifestyle.
