Implement Universal Healthcare Coverage for Pets in Canada/Alternative Family Benefits

Implement Universal Healthcare Coverage for Pets in Canada/Alternative Family Benefits
The Issue
For many people, pets are more than just animals—they are part of the family. Many people make the profound choice to have pets instead of having children, yet we struggle to access affordable care for our alternative offspring. Moreover, these creatures aren’t simply companions. Many pets offer therapeutic support and provide important services to society, filling a vital role in our community fabric.
In Canada, healthcare is deemed a fundamental right for humans. Therefore, extending this right to all members of our families, including pets, aligns with our constitutional values; this offering will also help prevent further deterioration of household income and unmanageable debt. The current system marginalizes those committed to the well-being of their animal family members by not providing affordable healthcare options.
The cost of preventive and emergency veterinary care has steadily increased over the years, compelling many pet owners to make heartbreaking decisions based on finances rather than the well-being of their pets (Canadian Veterinary Medical Association, 2019). Additionally, up to 35% of Canadian pet owners reported not visiting a vet due to anticipated high costs (JAVMA News, 2020).
This petition seeks the intervention of Canadian lawmakers to consider establishing Universal Healthcare Coverage for pets. Alternatively, an option is to allow all tax-paying families to benefit from their tax payments; we have the Canada Child Benefit that is paid to families with children, but what about those who either cannot have children, or choose pets as their "children/family" to care for? This would equip pet owners to provide the best possible care for their loved ones without draining their finances. Together, let's ensure that all of Canada's families, animal-included, are afforded the healthcare they deserve. Sign this petition, and let's create a more compassionate Canada.
Petition to the House of Commons to come in May/June 2025.
