Implement Traffic Calming Measures on Over Lane and Almondsbury Village Roads

The Issue

Residents of Over Lane and Lower Almondsbury have seen the traffic volume down the lane and through the village increase steadily over the years.    Many drivers blatantly exceed the speed limit, posing a real threat to those pulling out of their drives, cyclists and pedestrians alike. Our safety is further compromised given that large portions of Over Lane lack footpaths, and by the presence of numerous blind bends. Additionally some Over Lane residents have driveways that do not allow them to turn their vehicles  round, and consequently  they are forced to reverse out of their driveways into the  fast-moving traffic.  This risky practice is made more hazardous because of the high number of motorists exceeding the speed limit.

Antisocial driving practices such as ‘tailgating’, and dangerous overtaking are common place.  Recent traffic monitoring carried out by SGC suggests that in excess of 85% of motorists exceed the 30mph speed limit. In fact cycling speed is more appropriate to most of the roads in Almondsbury.

The current situation will inevitably be aggravated by the proposed construction of new housing in Easter Compton, continued development at Severnside, and the Inevitable increase in traffic, both down the lane and through the village  while the proposed ‘improvements’ to the A38  take place.

We are asking our elected officials to take the necessary action to protect us, thier constituents. Specifically to install average speed enforcement cameras at the ends of Over Lane and Tockington Lane. Decisions about road safety are regrettably based on the number of accidents reported to the police, so as a resident it’s important to encourage those involved in any minor accidents you may witness to report them.
