Implement Traffic Calming Measures in Aberford, Leeds

Implement Traffic Calming Measures in Aberford, Leeds
The Issue
Aberford is under increasing threat from traffic volumes and speeding vehicles. Whilst an ongoing issue, this has been severely exacerbated by traffic diverting to avoid motorway roadworks, and includes speeding farm and heavy goods vehicles. The concern spreads to speeding vehicles on surrounding roads, including around the Aberford/Micklefield crossroads, scene of two serious RTAs.
This issue not only jeopardises the safety of its residents and vehicles - parked or otherwise - it also endangers roadside properties. Immediate and effective measures need to be implemented to address this pressing concern.
The dangers posed by speeding vehicles are not to be underestimated. According to the UK Department for Transport, casualties due to speeding have been a persistent issue, contributing to a significant number of accidents annually. In 2020 alone, speeding was a factor in over 2,500 reported road accidents in the UK. Residents of Aberford have witnessed firsthand the hazardous implications of unchecked vehicle speeds, from near misses to actual accidents involving pedestrians and other vehicles.
Whilst existing signage and speed activated warnings are clear and present, these are having little tangible effect on driver behaviours.
To mitigate these risks, we propose the introduction of traffic calming measures. These could include:
1. Installing speed bumps at strategic locations to physically slow down vehicles.
2. Considering the installation of fixed speed cameras.
3. Implementing a community speed watch program to actively involve residents in monitoring speeds and discouraging excessive speeding.
These solutions are not only practical but have been proven effective in similar communities across the UK. For example, in villages like Addingham and Gargrave, the implementation of such measures has led to a noticeable reduction in speeding incidents, significantly enhancing the safety and quality of life for residents.
We urge the Leeds City Council, in collaboration with the West Yorkshire Police, to prioritize the safety of Aberford's residents by putting these solutions into action. Your support is crucial in protecting our community from the dangers posed by traffic-related offenses.
Sign the petition to make Aberford a safer place for everyone.
