Implement the Distribution of Plastic-Free Carrier Bags at Supermarkets, restaurants, all

The Issue

Choose Better — Say No to Plastic, Paper & Fake “Bio” Bags. Say Yes to Truly Sustainable Biopolymer Bags.

I believe in a world free from the invisible but deeply harmful effects of plastic pollution — a world where we prioritise our health and the health of the planet.

This is more than just an environmental concern for me — it’s personal. My father was diagnosed with Parkinson’s. Both my grandmothers lost their lives to cancer. Several friends and family members suffer from endocrine disorders. These are not isolated events — they are conditions that scientific studies increasingly link to toxic chemicals found in plastics.

Common carrier bags — whether plastic or coated paper — often contain harmful compounds like Bisphenol A (BPA)and phthalates. These chemicals disrupt hormonal systems and have been associated with neurological disorders, various cancers, and reproductive issues, including endocrine diseases and erectile dysfunction (Chemistry World Journal, 2019; Environmental Health Perspectives, 2007; International Journal of Andrology, 2009).

But plastic is not the only culprit.

Many believe that paper bags are an eco-friendly alternative — but this is a dangerous misconception. Paper bags are resource-intensive to produce. They require massive amounts of water, deforestation, and toxic chemicals during pulping and bleaching. Their production can result in a larger carbon footprint than plastic, especially when used only once. Paper is not the solution — it’s simply another environmental burden.

And then there are so-called “bio” carrier bags — which are often anything but truly biodegradable. These bags still contain plastic, often blended with additives that allow them to pass as "biodegradable" through industrial tests like SIV or SIN. These additives do not eliminate plastic; they merely cause it to fragment into micro- and nanoplastics. These tiny particles seep into our soil, contaminate our water, and enter our bodies — causing unknown long-term damage and becoming nearly impossible to clean up. They are not a step forward — they are a clever disguise.

The real answer lies in genuine biopolymer carrier bags — made from renewable, non-toxic materials that break down naturally, leaving no harmful residues behind. These are not greenwashed solutions — they are truly compostable, non-polluting, and safe for both people and planet.

We need to demand more. We must urge supermarkets, restaurants, shops, hotels, events, festivals, and takeaway services to transition away from plastic, paper, and fake bio bags — and embrace genuine biopolymer alternatives that offer real sustainability.

This is a call to consumers, business leaders, and policy makers:
Let’s make the switch to plastic-free, toxin-free, truly biodegradable carrier bags.

Let’s protect our health. Let’s protect future generations. Let’s protect our planet.

Please sign this petition today to show your support for the elimination of harmful carrier bags and the adoption of safe, sustainable alternatives.

With hope, urgency, and gratitude,
