Implement the Advocate Protection Act swiftly
The Issue
Throughout my career as an advocate, I have witnessed and endured unnecessary and unjust treatments at the hands of authorities meant to uphold justice and integrity. Advocates often face intimidation, harassment, and abuse of power from the police, and even from within the Bar council tself. These experiences drive the urgent need for the Advocate Protection Act within our jurisdiction—an act that not only shields us from undue pressure and harm but also ensures we can continue to seek justice for our clients without fear or prejudice.
In India, where this issue is very prominent, similar legislations have already been proposed, but their implementation remains lethargic, leaving many vulnerable. According to the 'Bar & Bench' report, there has been a significant rise in threats and undue charges against advocates over the past decade, damaging both their personal lives and professional duties. These acts are not just attacks on individuals but on the very fabric of our justice system, which relies on the confidence and independence of its legal representatives.
By introducing a well-drafted Advocate Protection Act, we can provide advocates with the safeguards they deserve against police misconduct, Bar Council misuse, and courtroom tyranny. The act should include: compulsory rigorous investigations before any charges against advocates, clear guidelines on conduct towards advocates by law enforcement, and stringent penalties for misuse of power by any legal or judicial body.
This is not just about protecting advocates—it’s about preserving the integrity and credibility of our entire legal system. By ensuring advocates can perform their duties without duress, we protect the citizens who rely on them for justice.
Join us in demanding urgent action from the Ministry of Law and Justice. Together, we can create a safer, fairer environment for all legal practitioners. Your signature can make the difference in advocating for an equitable legal future. Please sign this petition now.
