Implement systemic and actionable changes in light of #JusticeForRGKar
The Issue
#JusticeForRGKar #SystemicChanges
This is further to our peaceful gathering at Stadhausanlage, Zürich on 29th August, 2024, in light of the horrific events that took place at RG Kar. We stood in protest and we stood in solidarity. We mourned the brave, young doctor we lost all too soon whilst recognizing the raging fire that she has ignited within us all. In the days ahead - we will continue to demand justice as best as we can until this is delivered.
However, as we are constantly reminded through various sources - even before, after and during the events at RG Kar - horrifying crimes are continuously being committed against women and young girls, not to mention other marginalized groups of people. And this is not limited to a state or a region.
We must strive to make a difference in any and every way possible. Systemic changes that are necessary – that are urgent and important - must take place. The happenings at RG Kar and other daily horrors must be stopped at any cost, regardless of everything and anything – removed from agenda, propaganda or affiliation. We cannot let this keep happening.
Therefore, based on strong suggestions from within the Indian diaspora here in Zürich, we demand that the following be implemented at the earliest in India:
- Resource allocation for every health facility to have a safe space, with safe toilets (lockable, well lit, safe access) for women staff to rest.
- For the above (point 1) to be put in place with the greatest urgency.
- For all persons to compulsorily complete a PSEAH (Protection from Sexual Exploitation, Abuse and Harassment) training for any kind of employment - in the public or private sector, and to sign a code of conduct.
- CSR to be used to set up PSEAH training offers with every technical college, coaching centre, training and tuition provider.
- Collective responsibility of all functionaries to protect each other in the work place, identify shortfalls and address them.
We would like to use these points in this moment to start a dialogue with appropriate representatives of India, both here and in India. Whilst we are keen to see a plan-of-action in this regard, we are also interested in contributing towards achieving this, if we can be of help.
This incident has been a tipping point for so many of us, globally, and has uncovered a plethora of issues that must be resolved. We must act now for the betterment of our futures and we firmly believe that we can collectively make a positive difference.
