Implement Student Loan Forgiveness for Federally Enrolled Native Americans

Implement Student Loan Forgiveness for Federally Enrolled Native Americans
The Issue
This petition is deeply personal to me, as it addresses a long-standing issue that has affected the Indigenous communities of this country. The educational provisions in treaties and government policies that were intended to "benefit" Native Americans have often been rooted in an assimilationist agenda. This agenda sought to erase our cultures and languages rather than genuinely supporting our right to self-determination and cultural preservation.
The educational policies of this era reflect broader colonialist strategies aimed at subjugating and assimilating Native American peoples. Today, we see the impact of these policies on the financial burden carried by many Indigenous students who have pursued higher education. According to a 2015 study from the National Center for Education Statistics, about 60% of Native American young adults are enrolled in college or graduate school (source: NCES). However, due to historical inequities, many are left with significant student loan debt.
We call upon our leaders to recognize these systemic issues and implement student loan forgiveness for federally enrolled Native Americans as an act of justice. It's time for us not only acknowledge past wrongs but also take tangible steps towards rectifying them.
Please sign this petition if you believe in equal access to education without crippling debt for all citizens - including Federally Enrolled Native Americans.
