Implement Student Awareness and Prevention on school shootings in Yorktown, VA
The Issue
On behalf of my daughter and friends...
As concerned students of Tabb High School a Yorktown, VA public school, the reality of possible school shootings in our community is deeply upsetting. Our future is under threat as well as our safety, which should be a guarantee in schools. It's personal to each one of us as incidents of school shootings have continued to rise in the United States.
Public Schools should be sanctuaries for education and personal growth, not places where we fear for our lives.
Tabb High School prioritizes school athletics, school image, phone use, dress code and tardiness rather than focusing on the increasing amount of school shootings going on in the USA. Just last week, there were two school shootings, one at Apalachee Highschool in Georgia and the other at Joppatowne Highschool in Maryland. How do schools expect us to learn and focus when we live with the constant fear that a random school day may be our last? As students, we should not have to go into an environment that we are told is safe, but really isn’t. We have the constant feeling of fear in the back of our minds that something may happen any day.
On 09/09/2024, my parents received 2 calls from principal Mary Lugo about threats that were made to Tabb High School and Tabb Middle School, these threats were made by my own school mates. Yes, a 14 year old student was charged, but how do we know it will not happen again, and How do we know that these threats won’t come true? School shootings need to be talked about, so Why do we as students not know what to do in case of one? Why haven’t we tried to introduce awareness and utilize prevention safety measures?
Join us as we are urge York County school officials to implement comprehensive and effective measures to prevent school shootings, including appropriate security measures, necessary education and awareness for students on this subject as well as mental health resources.
No student should live in fear of a day at school turning into a horrific tragedy. It's time we speak up and stand up to ensure the safety of all students in York County Public schools.
