As someone who has always received unconditional love from animals, it deeply saddens and disturbs me to witness poor treatment of pets. This issue has a personal significance that I, among many others, cannot ignore. The love and bond we share with our pets should reflect in how we treat them.

Unfortunately, many pets across the nation suffer at the hands of their owners. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) estimates that every year, around 1.5 million companion animals are subjected to other forms of mistreatment (ASPCA, n.d.). This is a statistic that should shock and alarm us all.

We are calling upon our government officials to enforce stronger regulations on pet treatment. Not only does this mean harsher penalties for abuse, but also education programs on pet care for potential owners and a mandate on neutering options to control overpopulation.
