Implement Stricter Online Bullying Measures on Platforms Like TikTok and Reddit
The Issue
As victims of relentless online trolling that has even escalated into real-life harassment, we are personally invested in this cause. We know the devastating impacts of such behaviour - the fear, the stress and the constant feeling of vulnerability. It has become abundantly clear that this issue isn't given the seriousness it deserves.
Online platforms such as TikTok and Reddit, where such trolling often originates, need to take more responsibility for the harassment occurring under their watch. When trolls are banned, they should not be allowed to create another account, essentially getting free rein to continue their harmful behaviour.
Moreover, forums that encourage snark and mean-spiritedness, like threads on Reddit or Tattle Life, need tougher regulations. These serve as breeding grounds for trolls, giving them a platform to coordinate and carry out their harassments.
Cyberbullying has serious consequences, affecting both the mental and physical health of victims. According to a study by the Cyberbullying Research Center, about 20% of victims report serious considerations of suicide (Patchin & Hinduja, 2016). This is a terrifying statistic, one that highlights the crucial need to tackle this problem right from its roots.
Additionally, we urge the legal system to provide the police with more power to trace and hold accountable the individuals behind such vile acts. Anonymity, the ultimate shield for these cowards, must be stripped away. If trolls were aware their actions were traced, it could act as a significant deterrent.
We implore you; sign this petition and help create a safer Internet environment for everyone.
