As a citizen living in Belize, it breaks my heart to witness the daily abuse and neglect endured by animals, specifically dogs, cats, and horses. Every day, I see animals in dire conditions, starving, without a home or someone to care for them.

Our beautiful country has a dark side, as reports of animal abuse are continually surfacing on the internet. This reinforces that current laws are not sufficient to deter or penalize abusive acts towards animals. Therefore, we are calling on the government of Belize to take immediate action and protect the innocent lives of these creatures.

We urgently require stricter legislation and harsher penalties for those guilty of animal cruelty. Moreover, the government must enforce laws that regulate animal ownership, ensuring that pets go to caring homes where they will receive proper food, healthcare, and affection. We suggest that an extensive education program on animal care and rights could accompany these laws, to foster a culture of compassion and responsibility, and to curb the issues at their root.

In the US, studies have shown that regions with comprehensive animal protection laws see fewer instances of animal cruelty (source: ASPCA). We believe that similar laws would dramatically improve the situation for animals in Belize as well.
